I would love to see more people get involved in this area. Seeing a Pyr in the obedience ring performing well is an awesome sight. But they are a challenge.

I do think that rally is wonderful for a breed like Pyrs, especially Novice where they can stay on lead throughout. Being able to talk to them throughout and make them feel like it is just a game that you are playing together makes such a difference. My girls seemed to enjoy it and did well enough to earn their rally novice titles. I think the main thing to keep in mind is that you are working together as a team and it should be fun for both of you.

I agree Stephanie! Rally can be so much fun!!! I was pretty scared at first because of the other handlers...A lot of people show their dogs in Rally where they actually can be shown in Obedience. The whole idea of Rally is to prepare dogs for obedience and have fun while doing it. My girl is actually does much better off leash and enjoys Rally Advanced so much more...maybe because she can't feel my worries go down the leash? LOL

I've done rally o in Canada, we got quite the ovation. Got my boy both the CKC and CARO titles, and one with a second placing. IT's awesome fun, training is fun in itself as you have to be very creative. I find that the traditional obedience is too firm and ridged, most pyrs wouldn't enjoy it. We both enjoy rally o.

I'm new to obedience and I'm not sure what rally is.

The 4-year old collie we have part-time is a smart guy even though he failed obedience twice with his human. I think because they didn't follow through. I've now started having him come and stay. He is extremely food motivated. It's pretty funny how he comes at a run now. Before, he ignored me just like his Aunty Clara.

Will it always be that he will only come for treats?

I'm going to take obedience with him and whenever my future Pyr comes to live with me, I'll take her, too. I would like to do obedience with her when the time comes.

Clara was never very food motivated. What is the trick to teaching a Pyr obedience as I know they are independent thinkers and firmness is out of the questions. At least it was with Clara. And repetitiveness certainly bored her.

I appreciate any help you can provide to me.

Donna, if you would like ro learn what Rally-Obedience is you can go to youtube and search "rally-o". There are MANY videos of performances :) Here is one just as an example.

Rally is much more fun than regular obedience because you can talk to the dog, clap your hands, etc. It's a lot of fun!

From my limited experience with training Lily I had to learn to stay positive and do not get frustrated. It's important to show them that you are a FUN person and training is bunch of games with plenty of praise and the BEST food available :)

I will have a look at you tube. Thanks, Oleysa. So, patience and good treats. Got it.

Good treats means the WORLD! Lily is not food motivated at all but when I broil hotdogs, smoked sausage, or fresh liver she will do anything :) I also use cheese, deli ham, boiled beef heart, and steak and NO, she is not spoiled! LOL

I just finished a basic Rally class (last night) and I'm trying to decide if we're ready to compete yet. I'm not sure Fin will do anything without a liver treat in close proximity :) Also, there are some handler error issues... There's a Rally trial here in a few weeks which we could enter. I wonder if I can teach her to read the signs in such a short time.

Are then any basic Rally classes in the Seattle Wa area?
